About Rumour Detector: Championing Truth in the Digital Age

Welcome to Rumour Detector, the leading independent platform dedicated to fact-checking in Bengali. In an era where misinformation spreads faster than truth, our mission is to bring clarity, accuracy, and trust back to your news feed. We are here to help you separate fact from fiction and to build a more informed digital community in Bangladesh and beyond.

Our Objective

The primary objective of Rumour Detector is to combat the spread of misinformation and disinformation within the Bengali-speaking digital landscape. We aim to:

  • Empower Citizens: Provide the public with accurate, unbiased, and easy-to-understand fact-checks to help them make informed decisions.

  • Promote Digital Literacy: Increase public awareness about the dangers of fake news and equip individuals with the critical thinking skills needed to identify false information themselves.

  • Ensure Accountability: Hold public figures, media outlets, and online influencers accountable for the information they share by systematically verifying their claims.

  • Build a Culture of Truth: Foster a digital environment where truth is valued, and the spread of rumours is actively discouraged.

Our Policies: A Commitment to Trust and Transparency

Our credibility is our most valuable asset. To earn and maintain your trust, we operate under a strict set of policies that govern our work.

Ethics Policy

Rumour Detector is committed to upholding the highest standards of journalistic ethics. Our work is guided by the principles of impartiality, fairness, and transparency.

  • Non-Partisanship: We are an independent, non-partisan organization. We fact-check claims from all sides of the political and social spectrum without fear or favour. Our staff and contributors are prohibited from engaging in political activism that could compromise our impartiality.

  • Transparency of Sources: We rely on open and verifiable sources for our research. We clearly cite our sources so that our readers can verify our findings for themselves.

  • Transparency of Funding: We are transparent about our funding sources to ensure our financial independence is clear to our audience. We do not accept funding that could compromise our editorial independence.

For a detailed overview of our ethical commitments, please read our full [Ethics Policy Page – link to the page when created].

Fact-Checking Policy

Our process for fact-checking in Bengali is rigorous and methodical. This policy outlines the steps we take to ensure every report is accurate and well-researched.

  1. Claim Selection: We select claims to investigate based on their potential public impact, virality, and significance. We welcome suggestions from our readers.

  2. Thorough Research: Our fact-checkers use a variety of tools and techniques to verify news, including consulting primary sources, interviewing experts, and analyzing public data. We strive to use at least two independent sources for verification.

  3. Rating System: After investigation, we assign a clear rating to the claim (e.g., True, False, Misleading, Unproven, Satire) to provide an at-a-glance conclusion.

  4. Writing and Review: A detailed article is written explaining the claim, the evidence found, and the reasoning behind our rating. Every fact-check is reviewed by at least one other editor before publication to ensure accuracy and fairness.

To understand our methodology in detail, please visit our [Fact-Checking Policy Page – link to the page when created].

Corrections Policy

We are committed to accuracy, but we recognize that mistakes can happen. When they do, we are committed to correcting them promptly and transparently.

  • Reporting Errors: If you believe we have made an error, please contact us with a clear explanation and any supporting evidence.

  • Review and Correction: We will investigate the potential error immediately. If a correction is warranted, we will update the article and add a clear note explaining the correction that was made.

  • Major Corrections: For significant errors that alter the conclusion of a report, we will issue a prominent correction notice at the top of the article to ensure our readers are aware of the change.

Our full corrections process is detailed on our [Corrections Policy Page – link to the page when created].
